Oak-effect sliding wardrobe doors, fitted wardrobes made and installed by George Herkes & Son in East Lothian

If you want storage that fits your room properly, rather than a standard unit with gaps around it, bespoke joinery is the answer. We build fitted wardrobes, alcove units, fitted cupboards, shelving, under-stair storage and staircases to suit your home, and fit them ourselves.

We are George Herkes and his son Ross, based in Tranent and working across East Lothian for 37 years. Every job starts with a visit to your home and a free estimate.

What bespoke joinery and fitted furniture covers

Bespoke means made for your room, not adapted from a catalogue range. We measure on site and build to those measurements, so the finished furniture sits snugly against your walls, floors and ceilings.

Typical jobs include:

  • Fitted wardrobes, including sliding and hinged doors
  • Alcove units, shelving and fitted cupboards either side of a chimney breast
  • Under-stair storage that makes use of awkward space
  • Staircases
  • Other built-in furniture designed around a particular room

Fitted wardrobes and alcove units for awkward spaces

Most homes in East Lothian have at least one awkward corner: a sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, an alcove that is not quite square, or a wall that is not quite straight. This is where fitted furniture earns its keep, because it can be cut and scribed to follow the shape of the room.

One customer, Helen Robertson, put it like this: "My ideas for a fitted wardrobe started out on the back of envelope but George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits." You do not need a finished design. A rough sketch and a conversation is a good place to start.

You can see examples on our recent work section, including oak-effect sliding wardrobe doors.

What to expect, from first visit to finished work

We keep the process simple and explain each step in plain words.

First, you get in touch by phone or online. We visit your home, look at the space, measure up and talk through what you want to store and how you want it to look. Then we give you a free estimate. As one customer, James Allan, said: "George responded quickly to my online enquiry, visited the site and provided an estimate which I considered to be fair and reasonable for the work involved."

Once you are happy to go ahead, we make the furniture and fit it in your home. George and Ross do the work themselves, so you deal with the same people from start to finish.

Things to think about before you start

Style and finish. Current popular choices include warm woods such as oak and walnut, handleless doors, soft-close fittings and built-in LED lighting. Inside, you can plan adjustable shelving, pull-out rails, drawers and compartments for shoes and bags. We will talk through what suits your room and how you use it.

Painted or timber. Painted units and natural wood finishes behave differently and suit different rooms. Ask us about the options and we will explain what we would recommend for your job.

Building warrants. Fitted furniture on its own is generally low-risk. If your project also involves altering walls or structure, or you live in a flat, a listed building or a conservation area, check the position first. The Building Standards Service at East Lothian Council can confirm in writing whether a warrant is needed, and planning permission or listed building consent are separate matters. If you are unsure, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.

Questions we're asked.

Do you fit wardrobes and alcove units in East Lothian?

Yes. We make and fit fitted wardrobes, alcove units, fitted cupboards and shelving across East Lothian, including Tranent, Musselburgh, Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar. We visit your home, measure up and give you a free estimate before any work starts.

Can fitted furniture work with sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and uneven walls?

Yes, that is one of the main reasons to choose bespoke. Because we build to your measurements, the furniture can be cut and scribed to follow sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and walls that are not straight, so you avoid unsightly gaps and wasted space.

Do I need a building warrant for fitted wardrobes or alcove units?

Fitted furniture on its own is generally low-risk for building warrants. If the job also alters walls or structure, or your home is a flat, listed or in a conservation area, check first. East Lothian Council's Building Standards Service can confirm in writing whether a warrant is needed.

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure fitted furniture?

Bespoke furniture is designed and built around your room and how you use it. Some made-to-measure ranges adapt standard parts to your sizes. When comparing quotes, ask who designs it, who makes it, and who fits it. With us, George and Ross handle the work.
