Oak and frameless glass stair balustrade with square oak newel and matching wall handrail

Haddington is East Lothian's county town, and it is a short drive east of our base in Tranent. We work here regularly, fitting kitchens, wardrobes, doors and staircases and taking on renovations for homeowners in the town and the villages around it.

It is a town where the homes vary a lot. The centre has a largely medieval street plan, with narrow buildings along the main streets and long plots behind them reached by closes and pends. Beyond that you will find terraces, Georgian townhouses and newer estates on the edge of town. Each needs a slightly different approach from a joiner.

Joinery for Haddington's older homes

Much of the town centre is a conservation area with many listed buildings, so a lot of the work we are asked about involves traditional properties. That means sash windows, panelled doors, staircases and fitted furniture that has to sit well in rooms where the walls are rarely square.

We work with original features rather than against them. Where something can be repaired, we will tell you so, and where new joinery is needed we make it fit the house. You can see examples of our own work in our recent work.

Kitchen fitting, fitted wardrobes and loft conversions in Haddington

Here are the jobs we can take on for you in Haddington. Everything is measured on site, so it fits the house you actually have. Helen Robertson, a customer, put it this way: "My ideas for a fitted wardrobe started out on the back of envelope but George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits."

  • Kitchen fitting, from removing the old units to the finished worktops and doors
  • Fitted wardrobes, alcove units, shelving and under-stair storage
  • Staircases, including new handrails and balustrades
  • Internal, external and fire doors
  • Timber and sash window repairs
  • Loft and garage conversions
  • Bathrooms, flooring and full home renovations
  • Decking and outdoor joinery

Listed buildings, conservation areas and building warrants

If your home is listed or in the conservation area, some changes can need consent from East Lothian Council before work starts. This is most likely with windows, doors and the outside of the building. We will flag it at the estimate so there are no surprises.

Structural work such as altering a roof or external walls needs a building warrant, which matters for loft conversions. If plans change after a warrant is granted, an amendment is needed before the change is made. It is always worth checking warrant status before work begins, and we are happy to talk it through.

Questions from Haddington homeowners.

Do you work in Haddington?

Yes. We are based in Tranent, a short drive west, and work in Haddington regularly. George will visit, measure up and talk through what you want, then give you a clear written estimate. Estimates and advice are free, so call 07860 211 815 or email info@ghsjoinery.co.uk with a few details.

Can you work on a listed house or one in the Haddington conservation area?

Yes. We are used to traditional properties and work with original features rather than against them. Changes to windows, doors and the outside of a listed building can need consent from East Lothian Council first, and the town centre is a conservation area, so we flag this at the estimate before any work is planned.

Do I need a building warrant for a loft conversion in Haddington?

Often, yes. A building warrant is needed for work such as changing roofs, external walls or other structural elements, and a loft conversion often involves that. Applications go through East Lothian Council, which encourages online submissions. We can talk through what your job involves at the estimate, and it is worth checking warrant status before work starts.

Do you fit kitchens and fitted wardrobes in Haddington?

Yes. Kitchen fitting and fitted furniture are a big part of what we do, including wardrobes, alcove units, shelving and under-stair storage. Everything is measured on site and scribed to your walls, which matters in older houses where nothing is square. Call George on 07860 211 815 for a free estimate.
