Pale blue fitted kitchen with breakfast bar and integrated appliances by joiner in Dunbar George Herkes & Son

Dunbar sits at the eastern end of the area we cover, and we're happy to travel there from Tranent. The town has a good mix of homes: traditional stone buildings around the High Street and harbour, older cottages and townhouses, and plenty of newer family houses on the edges of town.

That mix means the work varies a lot. One week it's careful joinery in an older property, the next it's fitting out a modern house with a new kitchen and proper storage. George and his son Ross take on both, and George will come out, measure up and give you a clear written estimate, free of charge.

Joinery in Dunbar's older and newer homes

Much of Dunbar's older housing is traditional stone, including cottages close to the centre and buildings along the High Street that were once shops with homes above. These properties often have odd angles, uneven walls and original features, so off-the-shelf solutions rarely fit. Made-to-measure joinery usually does the job better.

Newer homes in Dunbar tend to need something different: fitted wardrobes, alcove units, shelving and under-stair storage to make better use of the space, along with kitchen fitting, new doors and decking. We cover all of it, and you can see examples on our recent work section.

Listed buildings and conservation area work in Dunbar

Dunbar has a conservation area centred on the High Street, and many of the older buildings in the town centre are listed. Not every older property is covered, though, so it's worth checking your own address.

Listed Building Consent from East Lothian Council is needed for works that affect the character of a listed building, and that can include the interior. Large parts of Dunbar are also covered by an Article 4 Direction, which limits permitted development. If your home is listed or in the conservation area, check with the council before work starts on things like windows, doors or the outside of the building. We'll flag it at the estimate so there are no surprises.

Kitchen fitting, fitted wardrobes and bespoke joinery in Dunbar

We fit kitchens from start to finish, including breakfast bars and integrated appliances, and we build fitted wardrobes, alcove units and shelving to suit the room. Awkward spaces such as sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and recesses are where good joinery earns its keep.

One customer, Helen Robertson, put it this way: "My ideas for a fitted wardrobe started out on the back of envelope but George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits." Bring us your rough sketch and we'll work from there.

  • Kitchen fitting
  • Fitted wardrobes, alcove units, shelving and under-stair storage
  • Staircases and bespoke joinery
  • Internal, external and fire doors
  • Timber and sash window repairs
  • Decking and outdoor joinery

Loft conversions and home renovations in Dunbar

We also handle loft and garage conversions, bathrooms, flooring and wider renovations. In Scotland, converting a loft or garage into a room needs a building warrant, as does removing or building load-bearing walls and changing roofs or external walls. Starting without a warrant when you need one is an offence, so we'll talk through what your job involves before anything begins.

You can see the full range on our services page.

Questions from Dunbar homeowners.

Do you work in Dunbar?

Yes. We're based in Tranent and work in Dunbar regularly. George will come out, measure up and give you a clear written estimate, free of charge. We cover kitchens, fitted wardrobes, doors, windows, loft and garage conversions, renovations and decking, so most joinery jobs in the town are covered.

My home in Dunbar is listed or in a conservation area. Can you still help?

Yes. We're used to traditional properties and work with original features rather than against them. Changes to windows, doors and the outside of a listed building can need consent from East Lothian Council first, and large parts of Dunbar have extra planning controls. We'll flag this at the estimate.

Do I need a building warrant for a loft or garage conversion in Dunbar?

Yes. In Scotland, converting a loft or garage into a room needs a building warrant, and so does altering load-bearing walls or roofs. It's an offence to start without one when it's required. We'll explain what your project needs at the free estimate, and you can confirm details with East Lothian Council.
