Grey handleless kitchen with under-cabinet lighting and stone-effect worktops fitted by a joiner in Musselburgh

Musselburgh is East Lothian's largest town and just along the road from our base in Tranent. George Herkes runs the firm with his son Ross, and we have been trading since 1989 (37 years). We work in Musselburgh regularly, from the streets around the Esk and the High Street to the newer estates on the edge of town.

The homes here are a real mix, and that shapes the work. Older properties often have walls, floors and ceilings that are far from straight, which is where made-to-measure joinery earns its keep. You can see the kind of jobs we take on in our recent work.

Joinery for Musselburgh homes, old and new

Musselburgh has housing from several eras. Near the town centre and the river there are traditional tenements and terraces, including some late Georgian houses, and Inveresk has its own older character. Further out you will find Victorian and Edwardian villas, post-war council-built housing and newer developments.

Each type asks for something different. In an older terrace it might be a fitted wardrobe or alcove unit built around a chimney breast that isn't square, or timber sash and case windows that need repairing rather than replacing. In a post-war or newer house it is more often a new kitchen, internal doors, storage or a loft or garage conversion to gain space.

Kitchen fitting, fitted wardrobes and renovations in Musselburgh

Most of our Musselburgh enquiries fall into a handful of jobs. We can take a project from a rough idea through to the finished room, or just do the part you need.

One customer told us: "My ideas for a fitted wardrobe started out on the back of envelope but George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits." (Helen Robertson). That is exactly the kind of work we enjoy. You can read more on our reviews section.

Building warrants, listed buildings and conservation areas in Musselburgh

Most like-for-like jobs, such as a new kitchen, wardrobes or internal doors, don't need a building warrant. Loft and garage conversions, altering load-bearing walls and adding or enlarging openings in external walls usually do. The warrant comes from East Lothian Council's building standards team, and a completion certificate is needed at the end. Even work that needs no warrant must still meet building standards.

Musselburgh and Inveresk both have conservation areas, and some buildings in the town are listed. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with East Lothian Council before changing windows, adding roof windows or altering the outside of the building. We will tell you at the estimate what is likely to need consent so there are no surprises.

Questions from Musselburgh homeowners.

Do you work in Musselburgh?

Yes. We are based in Tranent, a short drive away, and work in Musselburgh regularly. George will come out, measure up and give you a clear written estimate, free of charge. Call 07860 211 815 or email info@ghsjoinery.co.uk to arrange a visit.

Do I need a building warrant for joinery work in Musselburgh?

Most like-for-like jobs such as new kitchens, wardrobes and internal doors don't. Loft and garage conversions and structural changes usually do, through East Lothian Council's building standards team. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check consent too. We will tell you what applies at the estimate.

Can you fit a kitchen in Musselburgh?

Yes. Kitchen fitting is one of our main jobs in Musselburgh. We can fit the units, worktops and any joinery around them, and make neat solutions for walls that aren't straight. George visits, measures up and gives you a free written estimate before any work starts.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for older Musselburgh houses?

Yes. Older homes often have chimney breasts, sloping ceilings and uneven walls, so we build wardrobes, alcove units and shelving to measure rather than from standard sizes. Send George a few photos and rough ideas, and he will advise and give a free estimate.

How do I get a joiner's quote in Musselburgh?

Call George on 07860 211 815 or email info@ghsjoinery.co.uk with a few details and photos if you have them. He will visit, look at the job and give you a clear written estimate. Estimates and advice are always free.
