North Berwick is a lovely town to work in. It grew as a seaside resort in the Victorian era, and you can still see it in the big villas behind the bays, the stone cottages near the centre and the flats above the older shop fronts. Newer estates have been added around the edges of town since the 1970s. Every one of those homes asks something different of a joiner.
We're George and Ross Herkes, a father and son team based in Tranent, and we travel to North Berwick regularly for kitchens, fitted furniture, doors, windows and renovations. Estimates and advice are always free.
Large Victorian villas, including many along the shore at Beach Road and Marine Parade, have generous rooms with tall ceilings and chimney breasts. Those rooms suit bespoke alcove units, shelving and fitted wardrobes made to fit the walls as they really are, because old walls are rarely square.
Many of the bigger houses and former guest houses in the town have been split into flats over the years. These often have awkward corners, sloping ceilings and odd-sized spaces, which is where fitted furniture and under-stair storage earn their keep. The sea air also means external doors and windows have to be fitted and finished properly to last.
Here is what we do most often for North Berwick customers. You can see all of it on our services page, and some of our finished jobs under recent work.
North Berwick has its own conservation area, and there are listed buildings in the town. If your home is one of them, changes to windows, doors or the outside of the building can need consent from East Lothian Council first. East Lothian Council publishes a conservation area appraisal for the town, and it's worth reading before you plan anything.
Structural work, conversions and some alterations need a building warrant, which is separate from planning permission. The rules for flats are tighter than for houses, which matters in a town with so many converted villas. We'll tell you at the estimate what we think applies to your job, and you can confirm it with the council.
George comes out, looks at the space, measures up and gives you a clear written estimate, free of charge. One customer put it this way: "George responded quickly to my online enquiry, visited the site and provided an estimate which I considered to be fair and reasonable for the work involved." (James Allan). You can read more on our reviews, where we're rated 5.0 from 63 reviews.

Yes. We're used to traditional properties and work with original features rather than against them. Changes to windows, doors or the outside of a listed building can need consent from East Lothian Council first, and we'll flag that at the estimate so you know before work starts.
It depends on the job. Alterations, conversions and structural changes generally need a building warrant, which is separate from planning permission. Exemptions are narrower for flats. We'll give you our view at the estimate, and East Lothian Council can confirm what applies to your property.
Yes. Older rooms often have uneven walls, chimney breasts and awkward corners, and we build fitted furniture to suit them. Helen Robertson said of her wardrobe: "George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits."
