Wood-effect fitted kitchen with floating shelves and integrated ovens, an example of kitchen fitting in East Lothian

A new kitchen is one of the biggest jobs you can do in your home, and the fitting matters as much as the units you choose. Straight walls, level worktops, tidy joins and doors that hang properly all come down to the joiner doing the work.

We are George Herkes and his son Ross, joiners in Tranent since 1989 (37 years trading). We fit kitchens in houses and flats across East Lothian, and because we are joiners first, we are used to solving the awkward bits that every real kitchen seems to have.

What does kitchen fitting involve?

Kitchen fitting is everything that turns a delivery of flat-packed or pre-built units into a finished, working kitchen. Every home is different, so we talk through exactly what you need before we give you an estimate.

Typically the work can include:

  • Fitting base units, wall units and tall units, levelled and fixed securely
  • Fitting worktops, including cut-outs for sinks and hobs
  • Fitting integrated appliances such as ovens
  • Floating shelves, open shelving and made-to-measure filler pieces
  • Doors, drawer fronts and handles adjusted so everything lines up
  • Bespoke joinery for awkward corners, alcoves and uneven walls

What to expect from the first visit to the finished kitchen

We keep things simple and explain each step in plain words, so you always know what is happening next.

First, call George on 07860 211 815 or send an enquiry. George visits your home, looks at the space and listens to what you want from the room. He will also point out anything that could affect the job, such as layout changes, walls or services.

After the visit you get a free estimate. Once you are happy, we agree start dates that suit you and plan the work. Then we fit the kitchen, and finish with a careful check of doors, drawers, worktops and appliances, so the room is left ready to use.

Do I need a building warrant for a new kitchen?

It depends on what you are changing. As a general guide, a like-for-like refit, where units, worktops and appliances go in the same places with no change to the layout or services, usually does not need a building warrant. Work that does not need a warrant must still meet Scottish building standards.

A warrant is usually needed if the work changes the structure, for example taking down a wall to open up a kitchen and dining room, or adding new doors or windows. In a flat, layout changes almost always need one. If you live in a tenement, you may also need your factor or neighbours to agree where shared pipes or ventilation are affected. A listed building needs Listed Building Consent for internal changes.

Never start work before a required warrant is in place. East Lothian Council can confirm what applies to your home, and we will tell you early if we think your plans need one.

Kitchen styles and layouts to think about

UK kitchen trends are moving towards warm neutrals, wood grain on doors and worktops, and matt, textured finishes rather than high gloss. Blue and green cabinets are popular too. On the layout side, integrated appliances, concealed storage and zoned areas are all in demand.

Whatever you choose, we fit it properly. You can see examples of our joinery in our recent work. If you want a pantry-style cupboard, alcove shelving or a unit built to fit a tricky space, our bespoke joinery means it can be made to suit.

Questions we're asked.

Do I need a building warrant to replace my kitchen in Scotland?

A like-for-like refit, with units, worktops and appliances in the same places and no change to layout or services, usually does not need a warrant. Removing a wall, adding doors or windows, or changing the layout of a flat usually does. Work without a warrant must still meet Scottish building standards. East Lothian Council can confirm.

How do I get a free kitchen fitting estimate in East Lothian?

Call George on 07860 211 815 or use the contact form on our website. George will visit your home, look at the space, talk through what you want and give you a free estimate. There is no charge for the estimate or the advice.

Which areas do you fit kitchens in?

We are based in Tranent and work in East Lothian. If you are not sure whether we cover your address, ring George on 07860 211 815 and ask. You can also see our areas covered page. We are happy to say whether we can help.

Can you fit a kitchen with awkward corners or uneven walls?

Yes. We are joiners as well as kitchen fitters, so we are used to working around uneven walls, alcoves and tricky corners. We can make filler pieces, shelving and fitted units to suit the space, so the finished kitchen looks neat rather than squeezed in.

What kitchen styles are popular at the moment?

UK trends include warm neutral colours, wood grain, matt and textured finishes, and blue or green cabinets. Integrated appliances and concealed storage are also popular, along with open shelving. We fit whichever style you choose, and George can talk through the practical side of your layout at the free estimate.
