Fitting a kitchen yourself isn’t complicated. It’s unforgiving, and the unforgiving parts all arrive at the end when the material is already cut.

Is it difficult to fit a kitchen yourself?

Fitting a kitchen yourself isn’t difficult in the sense of being complicated. It’s difficult in the sense of being unforgiving. Assembling the units is easy. Getting a run level across a floor that isn’t, and scribing a worktop to a wall that bows, is where most people find out how difficult it really is.

What’s genuinely within reach

Flat-pack assembly

You can do this. The carcasses come with instructions, the cam locks are obvious, and an evening with a screwdriver gets you a stack of boxes. There’s nothing hidden in it.

Stripping the old kitchen out

Also within reach, with two caveats. Get the water off and the electrics isolated first, and don’t cut anything you can’t see the back of. Boxed-in soil pipes turn up in the strangest places in the older houses round Musselburgh and Prestonpans.

Setting the base units

Doable if you’re patient. You’re finding the highest point of the floor and working from there, packing everything else up to it. It’s slow, it’s fussy, and it isn’t hard.

Tiling a splashback

A small area of tiling is a reasonable first job. A full-height run behind a hob is not, and there’s a real gap between the two.

Where it gets difficult

Nothing in an old house is square

This is the bit that catches people. A wall that bows five millimetres over two metres doesn’t look bowed. It shows up when your worktop has a wedge-shaped gap behind it, and by then the worktop is cut.

Scribing

Scribing is fitting a straight edge to a wonky surface, and it’s a skill. You mark the wall’s shape onto the material with a compass or a block, then cut to that line. Get it wrong on a laminate worktop and you’ve bought another one. Anyone doing kitchen design in East Linton spends more time on this than on anything else.

Cutting the worktop

A sink cut-out, a hob cut-out and a mason’s mitre on a corner joint are all one-shot operations on an expensive piece of material. There’s no undo. kitchen fitting in East Lothian is priced with that risk in it.

Doors and drawers

Hanging doors so the gaps are even across a run is the thing that makes a kitchen look fitted rather than assembled. It takes adjusting, then adjusting again a fortnight later.

The bits you legally can’t do yourself

Electrics

Kitchen electrical work is notifiable. New circuits, moving sockets and anything near a sink has to be done properly and the council has to be told. That isn’t a DIY item.

Gas

A gas hob connection has to be done by a registered gas engineer. There’s no version of this you do yourself.

Waste and water

How to decide, honestly

Ask what your walls and floor are doing

Have you got a square room with a flat floor? Then a careful DIY fit is realistic. Have you got a Victorian kitchen with a floor that falls to the door? Then you’re taking on the hardest part of the job with none of the practice.

Split the job instead

The most sensible version is usually a split. Strip out and assemble the carcasses yourself, then have a joiner set the runs, cut the worktop and hang the doors. That’s where the skill is and it’s the shortest part of the programme.

Count the tools honestly

A router and a worktop jig, a good level, a track saw, a jigsaw and clamps. If you’re buying all of that for one kitchen, the sum changes the answer. A kitchen fitter in Fala will already own them.

Then decide

There’s no shame in either answer. Just don’t find out on the worktop.
