Oak-effect sliding wardrobe doors, an example of our fitted furniture joinery

Longniddry is a short drive from our base in Tranent, and we're happy to quote for work of any size, from hanging a single door to a full kitchen or loft conversion. George and his son Ross do the work themselves, so the person who measures up is the person who builds it.

Longniddry is a mix of homes from different periods, and that's what makes the joinery here interesting. Cottages, bungalows, villas and newer family houses all have their own awkward corners, and well-made joinery is often the best way to use them.

Homes in Longniddry and the joinery they need

Much of Longniddry was laid out as a garden village in the early twentieth century, with cottage-style homes on generous plots. Since then it has grown with villas, bungalows, council-built streets and family housing from the 1950s onwards, plus the newer Longniddry South homes near the station. Around the village there are also old farm cottages that have been renovated.

Every one of those asks for something different. Here are the jobs we're most often asked about in homes like these:

  • Fitted wardrobes and alcove units, built to suit sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and odd-shaped bedrooms
  • Kitchen fitting, from a straight swap to a full refit
  • Internal, external and fire doors, hung properly and finished neatly
  • Timber and sash window repairs for older homes
  • Loft and garage conversions to add a room without moving
  • Under-stair storage, shelving and staircases
  • Decking and outdoor joinery for gardens

Kitchen fitting, fitted wardrobes and loft conversions in Longniddry

Character homes like these suit joinery that's made to fit the room, rather than furniture that almost fits. A built-in wardrobe under a sloping ceiling or a pair of alcove units either side of a chimney breast uses space that would otherwise go to waste.

One customer put it this way: "My ideas for a fitted wardrobe started out on the back of envelope but George interpreted them perfectly and found ideal solutions for the awkward bits." (Helen Robertson). That is how we like to work: listen to what you want, then solve the awkward bits.

If you're thinking of a loft or garage conversion, or a wider home renovation including a bathroom or new flooring, we can look at the space with you and explain what's involved. You can see the sort of work we do in our recent work, or browse all our services.

Do you need a building warrant in Longniddry?

Most like-for-like jobs such as new kitchens, wardrobes and internal doors don't need one. Loft and garage conversions and structural changes usually do, through East Lothian Council's building standards team. We'll tell you at the estimate which applies to your job.

If your home is a listed building, changes to it need listed building consent, which is how the council checks that alterations suit its character. A few listed buildings are recorded in and around Longniddry, so it's worth checking before you plan work on windows, doors or the outside of an older property.

Do I need a building warrant for joinery work in Longniddry?

Most like-for-like jobs such as new kitchens, wardrobes and internal doors don't. Loft and garage conversions and structural changes, such as removing a load-bearing wall, usually do, through East Lothian Council's building standards team. Starting work without a warrant you need is an offence, so we'll tell you at the estimate.

Can you fit wardrobes in a bungalow or villa with awkward spaces?

Yes. Fitted wardrobes, alcove units and shelving are made to fit your room, so sloping ceilings, chimney breasts and odd corners aren't a problem. George will measure up, talk through your ideas and suggest practical ways to make the most of the space before giving you a free estimate.

My Longniddry house is listed. Can you still help with the joinery?

Listed buildings need listed building consent for changes that affect their character, and East Lothian Council decides that. Check with the council before planning work on windows, doors or exteriors. Call George on 07860 211 815 and we'll talk through what you have in mind and the sort of work involved.
