You do not need a joiner to fit a door. You need one to fit a door into an opening that has stopped being square, and most older openings have.

Do you need a joiner to fit a door?
You do not need a joiner to fit a door into a square, plumb lining if you are patient and own a chisel. You do need one when the opening has settled, when the lining is being renewed, when the door is external, or when it is a fire door. The opening decides it, not the door.

When you genuinely do not need a joiner
An existing lining that is true
If the old door came out of a lining that was square and plumb, and the new leaf is the same size, this is within reach. You are trimming a couple of millimetres, cutting two hinge recesses and fitting a latch.
A pre-hung set
A door supplied already hung in its lining takes the hardest part away. You are fixing a unit into an opening rather than fitting a leaf to one. Newer houses take these well, and the fixings are usually straight into a timber stud rather than into plaster.
What you actually need
A sharp chisel, a router or a hinge jig, a plane, a good square and a level. door fitting services in East Lothian exist partly because that list costs more than one door. A hinge jig alone is worth having if you are doing six, and worth borrowing if you are doing one.

What makes a door harder than it looks
Out of square, out of plumb, out of wind
Three separate faults and they compound. A lining can be square and still be out of wind, which means the two sides are on different planes. The leaf then touches at two corners and gaps at the other two, and no amount of hinge adjustment fixes it.
Scribing rather than trimming
A settled opening needs the leaf cut to the shape of the opening, not to a rectangle. You mark the shape with a block and a pencil and cut to that line. Get it wrong and the gap is permanent.
The mortice
A tubular latch is a drilled hole. A mortice lock is a deep pocket chiselled out of the edge of the leaf, kept square, and it is easy to wander. Anyone asking for a quote on door fitting in East Saltoun should say which they have.
External doors and fire doors
An external door carries weather, security and a threshold detail. A fire door carries intumescent strips, three hinges, a controlled gap and a label on the edge that must not be planed away. Neither is a first job. An external door also wants the frame checked before anything is hung, because a frame that has moved will not close on a weather seal however well the leaf is cut.
The houses round here that change the answer
Older stone properties
The burgh centres and the coastal villages are full of houses that have moved. Openings in Haddington, Dunbar and North Berwick are frequently several millimetres out over their height, and the leaf has to be scribed to suit.
Painted linings
A lining painted six or seven times has lost its crisp edge, and the stops have often been nailed over rather than repositioned. Anyone requesting a quote on door fitting in Edinburgh tenements meets this constantly.
Newer estate housing
Square openings, plasterboard linings, standard sizes. This is the stock where a careful homeowner gets a good result, and door fitting in Fala on that sort of house is a short job. The linings were machine-made and fitted in a dry building, which is most of the reason they are still true.
Deciding by the opening rather than by the door
Check four things before you decide.
- Hold a square in each corner of the lining. Any gap means scribing.
- Hold a level on both sides. Out of plumb means packing.
- Sight along the lining from one corner. If the far side twists away, it is out of wind.
- Measure the opening at the head, the middle and the foot. A difference over about 3mm changes the job.
If all four come back clean, fit it yourself. If any one of them does not, the leaf is going to need work that is quicker to buy than to learn on a door you have already paid for.
The middle path is worth naming too. Plenty of people hang the easy internal doors and call somebody for the external one and the two that stick. That is a sensible split and no joiner will think less of you for it. It is also the cheaper way round: the awkward openings are the ones where a mistake costs a new leaf, and they are usually the minority.
